North Terrace and Brauns Island Water Service

The Regional District is extending community water services to portions of Brauns Island and North Terrace, including, Dutch Valley, parts of Kalum Lake Road, Johns Road, Orde Road and parts of Merkley Road.

Project History

On November 5, 2008 there was a Public Open House to explain the proposed water service extension and answer any questions. A Referendum on whether to proceed with the proposed water service project was held on November 15, 2008, in conjunction with the local elections.

A Newsletter was circulated during October-November 2008 to residents within the Service Area explaining the proposed service and encouraging residents to vote in the referendum.

A second Newsletter was circulated early April 2009 to residents within the Service Area reporting on the referendum results (61% in favour), explaining Next Steps, and providing available information on costs, benefits, and questions related to connecting to the water system.

Current Status - May 13, 2009

RDKS is currently evaluating proposals to complete work on expanding the water system. Once the contract is awarded, work can begin - early June is anticipated.

Property owner consultation is in progress to complete the Water Connection Permit Application, determine the water service connection location, and discuss water conservation and composting programs. For appointments, please call RDKS reception at 250-615-6100.

Water Conservation

All new water systems require a Water Conservation Plan. The Plan for this new service area includes:

  • water metering (for every connection or for over-sized connections only)
  • education and information on Water Conservation strategies including natural landscaping choices
  • distribution of water saving devices (i.e. low flow shower heads)
  • extension of City of Terrace watering districtions (if you are using the water system for irrigation)
  • measurement of current and future water demands
  • annual review of the water conservation plan
