About Zero Waste
Mandate
Our mandate is to plan and promote awareness of green initiatives in the area, with an emphasis on waste avoidance and diverting materials from area landfills.
The Zero Waste Program (ZWP) is funded by the Regional District solid waste function. We are available to coordinate education and policy efforts, design and complete research projects, and implement new programs.
Services
The RDKS Zero Waste Program is fine-tuning existing programs and developing a variety of new initiatives to service Kitimat-Stikine residents. Here is just a sampling:
- Diversion Credit Program
- Evaluation of industry sponsored recycling programs (EPR or Take-Back programs)
- Development of on-site composting and sorting programs at transfer stations and landfills
- Community Education Programs (workshop series, contests, events, etc.)
- Natural Yard Care Education (composting, grasscycling, mulching, etc.)
- Display Campaigns
- Special Event Recycling and Tips for Zero Waste Meetings
- Community Partnerships
- Environmental Information and Referral Service (air quality, eat locally, climate change etc)
- Composter Sales and Building Plans
- Special Programs (worm bin distribution, etc.)
- Recycling Directories
- Market research and referral services for recycling-based entrepreneurs

Solid Waste Management Plan Monitoring Advisory Committee (PMAC)
The RDK-S Solid Waste Management Plan was developed under the guidance of the RDK-S Board. PMAC assists with the implementation and administration of the Plan and acts in an advisory role to the Regional District Board and staff on issues related to reduction and reused, education, recycling and composting, landfilling strategies, costs of the Plan components and other matters as required.
The Plan area includes all member municipalities and rural areas of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine.

Staff
Our team is a combination of staff from the RDKS and member municipalities, as well as consultants specializing in specific aspects of environmental protection and management. In addition, many valuable services are delivered by local entrepreneurs, provincial organizations and concerned residents.
Laurie Gallant is contracted by the RDKS to assist with Environmental policies and programs. Ms. Gallant is an environmental planner specializing in zero waste and air quality, with 19 years experience working in the field. She works from her home office in Smithers and comes to Terrace and other RDKS communities as needed.
