Regional District Community Heritage Registry
A community heritage registry is an official list of historic places, specific to the community of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, which have been identified by the local government as having heritage value or heritage character.
A Heritage Advisory Commission established in February 2008, by the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, acts as an advisory group to the Regional District Board on heritage matters. The Heritage Advisory Commission is an 8 member public group from various regions throughout the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine. Based on guidelines set out in the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine Heritage Register Implementation Plan and the Heritage Values Workshop Report the Heritage Advisory Commission makes recommendations to the Regional District Board about which historical sites should be placed on the Community Heritage Registry.
In 2005 prior to the creation of the Heritage Advisory Commission the Regional District Board placed the first 3 sites on the Community Heritage Registry. Those sites were the Anyox Powerhouse, the Old Skeena Bridge and the Hagwilget Bridge. In 2008 the Heritage Advisory Commission added 3 more sites to the registry. It is expected that in the coming years new sites will continue to be added to the registry.
As part of adding a historical site to the heritage registry each site must have a statement of significance (SOS). This document is required for each heritage site. There is a standardized format for a SOS; it provides a description of the site, identifies the heritage values and the character defining elements of the site. The SOS is usually prepared by a heritage professional and is a required document for placing heritage sites on the BC Registry of Historic Places and the Canadian Register of Historic Places. The Canadian Register of Historic Places has a searchable data base that permits visitors to their website to view a list of Canadian historic places.
