911 Service Starts February 4

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine initiated a 911-service feasibility study in 2001/02.

The feasibility study supported proceeding and planning for a regional 911 service, in consultation with participating municipalities and electoral areas.

In April 2004 the Regional District managed to obtain a Federal/Provincial Infrastructure Grant in the amount of $729,368 to assist with project capital costs.

By January 2005 most participating local government partners had agreed to implement a 911 service on a regional basis and the Regional District proceeded with the adoption of the necessary Regional District Service Area Establishment Bylaw.

Since then the Regional District has been working tirelessly with various stakeholders and contractors to make 911 service a reality including the Regional District of Fraser Fort George and Telus.

In order to minimize the operational cost of the service the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine in April 2006 entered into an agreement with Fraser Fort George Regional District to provide 911 call answering and fire dispatch services.

All 911 calls generated within the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine 911 Service Area will be answered at the Primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) operated by the Prince George RCMP Operational Communications Centre (OCC). Police calls will be handled be the RCMP OCC.  Ambulance calls will be connected to the BC Ambulance Service Dispatch Centre in Kamloops.  Fire calls will be connected to the Prince George Fire Operations Control Centre (FOCC) which will dispatch the 17 fire departments in the region participating in the Regional District Kitimat-Stikine 911 system.

The enhanced 911 emergency response system consists of dedicated telephone, radio and satellite communications technology for call answering and emergency dispatch of police, ambulance and fire departments.

The 911 system will serve Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine residents living in the areas of Kitimat, Terrace and the Hazeltons from Kitwanga to Moricetown and in Stewart.  Approximately 36,000 residents – 90% of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine population and about 50,000 km2 – 50% of the geographic area of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine will have 911 service.
