Thornhill Active Transportation Plan

Thornhill Active Transportation Plan

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine began developing an Active Transportation Plan for Thornhill in late summer 2013.  The Active Transportation Plan will provide direction for the Regional District and the Community of Thornhill to achieve better cycling and pedestrian facilities for present day use and upcoming years.  This long term plan will provide a strategy and investment priorities specific to cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.

Starting in September 2013, through an on-line survey and a public open house, information was collected from Thornhill residents about their walking and cycling habits, including suggestions for ways to encourage more active based transportion and improving access to walking and cycling options.  In addition, a technical advisory team was formed, that included representatives from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, Northern Health, School District 82, BC Transit, Terrace Off Road Cycling Assoc., the RCMP, the City of Terrace and the Thornhill Advisory Planning Commission. Members of the technical team, at two meetings, also provided important technical feedback on developing and improving active transportation options for Thornhill residents.

Urban Systems, the consulting firm that developed the plan on behalf the Regional District, gathered all the feedback and used it to help develop the Active Transportation Plan for Thornhill. The plan was completed in the Spring of 2014 and accepted by the Regional District Board in June 2014.
