    Deputy Fire Chief - Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department

    We are seeking an individual for the position of Deputy Fire Chief. This full-time position offers a competitive salary and a full range of benefits.

    This role is based in Thornhill BC, a community adjacent to Terrace, BC, as part of vital services for our residents, businesses and visitors to this community and other communities in our Regional District.

    This area is known for its world-class fishing and outdoor adventure opportunities, including a ski hill, 18-hole golf course, hiking and mountain biking trails. The area offers quality advanced education opportunities with both the Coast Mountain College and a University of Northern BC satellite campus. There is also a well-developed arts and cultural community, recreation facility and library.

    Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief will perform supervisory, administrative, emergency response, training and command and control activities. The Deputy Chief also assists the Fire Chief in organizing and directing the overall operation of the department, including all related activities. In addition, the Deputy Chief oversees all tactical operations for fire and other emergencies in the absence of the Fire Chief.

    Under general direction of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief participates in creating appropriate policies, procedures and resources so staff and volunteers can respond to emergency situations and perform their tasks efficiently and effectively. The Deputy promotes fire safety and the professional image of the Fire Department and champions an environment of collegial working relationships within the volunteer firefighter culture, contributing to a productive working environment. The Deputy has current and in-depth knowledge of all processes, policies, regulations and evidence-informed practices related to fire services, to delivery valuable and high-quality services. They coordinate approved levels and standards of service through effective management of human, physical, information and financial resources of the department.

    The preferred candidate will possess the following education and competencies:

    • Firefighter level II (NFPA 1001),
    • Fire Service Instructor I & II (NFPA 1041),
    • 5 Years of progressive firefighting experience,
    • 3 Years of management or supervisory experience as a Fire Officer,
    • Fire Officer I (NFPA 1021),
    • Incident Command System (ICS) 300,
    • First Responder III,
    • Knowledge of current legislation and regulation affecting the fire service in B.C.,
    • Proficiency using Microsoft office programs, (FirePro2 would be an asset),
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills,
    • Valid B.C. Class 5 with air endorsement, (Class 3 preferred),
    • Fire Inspector (NFPA 1031) & Fire Investigator (NFPA 1033) would be an asset.

    Environmental Programs Coordinator

    We are seeking an individual for the position of Environmental Programs Coordinator. This full-time position offers a competitive salary and a full range of benefits.

    The Regional District provides a variety of local government services to an area of 100,000 km² in northwestern British Columbia. Services range from rural land use planning to community water systems, fire protection, library services, solid waste services, recreation facilities and programs.

    This position is in Terrace, B.C., an area known for its world class fishing and outdoor adventure opportunities including a ski hill, 18-hole golf course and mountain biking trails. This area offers quality advanced education opportunities with both the Coast Mountain College and a satellite campus for the University of Northern BC. Terrace also has a well-developed arts and cultural community, recreation facility and library.

    Reporting to the Solid Waste Manager, within the Works and Services Department, the Environmental Programs Coordinator will prepare a variety of environmental type outreach material and participate in community engagement events. The position will provide support with environmental monitoring and data management, transitioning to environmental monitoring full time.

    The position requires a person with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain respectful working relationships with internal and external contacts under circumstances that are considerably complex.

    The preferred candidate will possess the following education and competencies:

    • Preference given to those with education in the Environmental Sciences,
    • Knowledge of the Environmental Act and related Regulations,
    • Confident presenting and hosting public outreach events,
    • Experience and interest in green initiatives such as water conservation, waste diversion, and greenhouse gas reduction,
    • Knowledge of British Columbia Stewardships,
    • Experience managing large amounts of data,
    • Previous sampling experience an asset,
    • Must be comfortable working in adverse conditions, hiking over uneven terrain, while carrying heavy loads,
    • Class 5 B.C. Driver’s license.
