FOIPPA
What is it?
The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is a provincial law that balances:
- the right to access government information
- the right to have personal information that is collected protected
A Freedom of Information (FOI) request is a formal process to ask for copies of the records and personal information about yourself or someone you are responsible for. It is also a way to access general information about non-personal information or records that could be released, in whole or in part, to anyone.
Requesting Information
Routine Records
Some records may be routine (not containing personal information or other information not releasable under provincial legislation) and do not require a formal FOI request.
If the record you require is a Routine Record (e.g. agendas and minutes of open meetings, building permits, bylaws, publications, and policies and procedures, etc.) the record may be available on our website. Otherwise, please contact the relevant department to access this type of information at 250-615-6100 or [email protected].
Non-routine (Formal) Records
A formal written request is required for access to records which are not routinely available. Please allow up to 30 business days for the completion of your request. There are occasions where your request may be completed sooner or take longer than 30 days, and may incur fees, depending on the amount of work required.
If the document you are looking for requires a formal FOI request, please complete a Request For Access To Records form and submit it to [email protected].
