Information for Candidates

A candidate is someone who wants to be elected to the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine Board of Directors to represent their constituents and the region. The RDKS administers local government elections for electoral area directors. 

If you're interested in becoming a candidate, you must be nominated, consent to the nomination, submit nomination documents and additional information, pay a nomination deposit (if applicable) and submit a financial disclosure statement that details your corporate and personal holdings. 

Nomination

To be a prospective candidate for local office, you must be nominated by at least two eligible electors from the local government where you are seeking election. You must also be eligible to vote in the jurisdiction as a resident elector or as a non-resident property elector.

To nominate a candidate for local office, a nominator must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older when they register to vote or will be 18 years of age or older on general voting day
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Have been a resident of B.C. for at least six months before registering to vote
  • Be a resident in the municipality or electoral area for which the nomination is being made, or in the case of a non-property resident property elector, own real property in the municipality or electoral area, for 30 days immediately before the day of registration
  • Not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law

Nomination Documents

Electoral area candidate nomination packages for the 2026 General Local Election will only be available during the nomination period, September 1 to September 11, 2026. During this time, you can pick up a package at the RDKS office (300-4545 Lazelle Ave) or one can be sent to you by email. Please send your request to [email protected].

The completed nomination package must be submitted to the Deputy Chief Election Officer at the RDKS main office during the nomination period. Please make an appointment by contacting 250-615-6100.

The nomination period begins at 9:00 am Tuesday, September 1, 2026 and ends at 4:00 pm Friday, September 11, 2026.

Campaign financing, disclosure, and election advertising

Elections BC administers campaign financing, disclosure, and election advertising rules under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act. Candidates, electoral organizations, and third-party advertisers are responsible for knowing these rules.

Candidates and third-party sponsors have expense limits that apply during the campaign period. Expense limits for the 2026 election are available here on the Elections BC website.

All candidates are required to submit their financial disclosure documents to Elections BC for verification and publication, in compliance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act. We can view financial disclosure statements on the Elections BC website, when available.

Elector organizations are required to register with Elections BC in order to endorse a candidate in an election, receive a campaign contribution, and incur an election expense. Please visit the Elections BC website for additional information.
