The Upper Skeena Recreation Centre's Park Development Plan is entering a new phase after last week's public open house. Those who attended saw conceptual designs for the redevelopment of the former Ken Trombley Arena site into outdoor community spaces.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine’s contractor Binnie will be onsite at the Upper Skeena Recreation Centre doing a public information session and gathering public input into a redevelopment plan for the old Ken Trombley Arena site.

The RDKS is hosting an update meeting on Feb. 21 in Dease Lake on the state of the Dease Lake Volunteer Fire Department, whose operations remain suspended until sufficient qualified members complete the training program.

Bylaw 779—Notice is hereby given that a Public Hearing will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, via Microsoft Teams and in person at the RDKS 1st Floor Board Room at 4545 Lazelle Avenue in Terrace.

A new location, the same community-building result. The RDKS and partners hosted a successful Christmas tree Chipping for Charity event on Jan. 7. Residents brought non-perishable foods in exchange for their trees being disposed of. See the attached poster for the event's results.

Tipping fees are increasing in the Terrace Service Area as of January 2023. Tipping fees are raising in response to increased operating costs and to ensure an adequate reserve for landfill cell closures and future required cell expansions.

The Public Hearings originally scheduled for Jan. 4, 2023 to consider the RDKS Zoning Amendment Bylaws 776 & 777 have been rescheduled and will be held on separate days—Wednesday, Jan. 25 and Thursday, Jan. 26.

UPDATE—Churchill Drive Watermain Break: The water is back on to the affected residents between 2122 and 2160 Churchill Drive, and repairs have been made.

All RDKS Solid Waste Facilities will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. There will be no RDKS curbside collection on Monday, Dec. 26. Monday’s route will be collected on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine has launched a free business assessment program to help businesses within the region access the professional expertise they need from a Certified Management Consultant (CMC).

Terrace, BC- October 20, 2022- Effective immediately, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine (RDKS) has made the difficult decision to suspend fire protection services (exterior operations – structural) until further notice in Dease Lake.

The Development Variance Permit (DVP) applications in question will first be reviewed at the Planning Committee meeting of the Regional District Board at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21, 2022. The DVP applications will then be considered for approval by the Regional District Board at its regular meeting starting at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21, 2022.

The success of businesses within our region is important for our local economy. The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine (RDKS) is conducting a regional business survey for communities within our region.

The Dease Lake Volunteer Fire Department is recruiting fire fighters. No experience necessary, training will be provided.

Please be advised that the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Old Skeena River Bridge Rehabilitation Project will begin later this month.

The RDKS is updating the 1983 Zoning Bylaw for Thornhill. This project will review the existing land use regulations and update the bylaw consistent with the new Official Community Plan (OCP).

Water restrictions are in effect for residents of the Thornhill and Terrace Rural Water Systems. Please be aware that until further notice, watering restrictions are now being implemented due to increasing demands created with warmer weather.

Residents are reminded that all Rural Property Taxes must be paid to the Province of British Columbia and not the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine.

On May 14, 2022, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine sponsored a free household hazardous waste drop-off for residents.

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine is in the process of updating its bylaws related to zoning and development servicing to implement Thornhill’s new Official Community Plan. The RDKS and City of Terrace will host a Christmas tree collection event on Jan. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In exchange for disposing of your tree, please bring a non-perishable food item. All donations will go to local food banks in the Terrace area.

UPDATE Nov 26, 2021 11:15 a.m. On November 25, 2021 (8:30pm) there was a Tactical Evacuation and Alert due to unknown slope stability in Copperside Estates. All homes in red on the attached map were required to evacuate, homes in yellow were put on alert but strongly advised not to sleep in basement.

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission made public its final report on the history and legacy of Canada’s residential school system. There were 94 Calls to Action. Call to Action #80 called upon the federal government to establish a statutory holiday, A National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

In the spring of 2021, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine (RDKS) released a survey asking for feedback on waste management in the region. An impressive 1,215 residents completed the survey with several themes emerging.

The Province of BC has announced that campfires will be permitted throughout the Northwest and Prince George Fire Centres as of noon today, Wednesday, July 28.

Campfires will be prohibited throughout the Northwest Fire Centre region, as well as the rest of the province, starting at noon Wednesday, June 30, 2021. Effective at noon (Pacific time) on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, campfires, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires will be prohibited.

The Regional District Kitimat-Stikine (RDKS) will host a town hall meeting at the Thornhill Fire Department on Wednesday July 7, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for residents affected by the June flooding event across several communities.

BC Hydro plans to close the Copper Mountain Access Road Closure over parts of two days in late June.

The Nisga’a communities in the Nass Valley, the District of Stewart, and Meziadin Junction will be without power for approximately 12 hours on Saturday, June 12 because of BC Hydro system upgrades.

Our flags at our Thornhill Fire Hall and our firehall in Gitaus, in conjunction with the Kitselas First Nation, are flying at half-mast to honour the 215 Indigenous children who never came home from the Kamloops residential school—as well as all other residential schools.

RDKS Economic Development is excited to host ‘Finding Funding in the North’—an interactive event teaching the basics on how to successfully identify and apply for funding in Northern B.C.

In the early evening of Wednesday, April 14th, a washout occurred on Telegraph Creek Road (Highway 51) between Dease Lake and the community of Telegraph Creek.

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine (Regional District) and Kitselas First Nation (Kitselas) have jointly completed a Thornhill Land Details Agreement. This agreement finalizes the boundaries of a portion of Crown Land on District Lot 373 in Thornhill to be transferred to Kitselas through their LNG Benefits Agreement with the province. It also sets out terms for a subsequent land exchange between Kitselas and the Regional District, and it establishes a Joint Community Use Area and Cooperative Management Agreement.
